1.Have a pasta, or any other carb-rich food, the night before your flight. Recent research has discovered that carbs boost your ability to sleep, especially when flying westward.
2. On the plane, sleep during what would be appropriate sleeping hours at your destination and turn the air-con up. The coolness lowers your body' core temperature, signalling it to sleep.
3. Airlines usually serve food during the meal times of the city you departed from. Avoid eating at these times as it will disrupt your acclimatisation.
4. Keep to water for hydration when you're flying. Alcohol is 2 - 3 times more potent when consumed on a flight (one glass has in the air has the effect of 2 - 3 on land) and will disrupt your internal clock and exaggerate jet lag.
5. Sitting upright, your body generates an adrenaline-like substance to keep blood flowing up to your brain. It keeps you from sleeping, and even if you do doze off, keeps you from having a deep restful sleep. We may not be able to afford the luxury flatbeds of first class, but make do with what you have and recline your seat as far back as you can.
